Overview

Position Summary:

The Vice President, Merchandise Planning is responsible for achieving sales and profit objectives for several merchandise categories, working in conjunction with the planning and allocation team and with the General Merchandise Manager and their respective buying teams. This responsibility includes overseeing the development and successful execution of topside and detail chain financial plans, location plans and other planning strategies. Within their immediate area, the VP, Merchandise Planning is responsible for the supervision, training and development of Director of Planning as well as their respective teams.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • In partnership with key business partners, establishes vision and game plan for long term growth strategy in order to maximize sales and gross margin at chain and region level

  • Leads development of chain and regional plans based on historical performance, current trends, competitive landscape and merchandising strategies

  • Gains alignment with executive team and leads the in season planning process in partnership with GMM

  • Provide structure and processes to maximize team productivity

  • Act as a positive and solution-oriented role model by teaching team members to work cooperatively and cultivate an environment of coaching in the moment

  • Develop sales, margin, and inventory productivity targets in partnership w/GMM, both pre-season and in-season

  • Leads the development and execution of regional strategies in support of corporate objectives to maximize sales and profitability of the business

  • Support an open and inclusive environment that recognizes associates’ contributions

  • Provides leadership to ensure the appropriate staffing and integration of work efforts across buying teams

  • Develops and maintains a strong teamwork environment with all teams that impact planning and allocation (e.g., merchandising, stores, logistics, IT)

  • Creates and evaluates strategies to optimize skills training and development.

Education and Qualifications:

Education: College degree

Experience:

Minimum 12+ years’ experience in buying and/or planning capacity

  • Structured & Logical Thinking - The ability to understand the implications of strategic analysis, and to make strong, well supported recommendations

  • Analytical Rigor - Proven capability for conducting and managing quantitative strategic analysis

  • Technical Proficiency - Able to take data from various sources with ability to use Excel, PowerPoint, etc. to put together effective analysis, recommendations, and presentations

  • Passion for Retail - A desire to make one of the world’s strongest off price apparel and home furnishings retailers even stronger

  • Communication - Ability to communicate effectively and succinctly, both verbally and in writing
